Skål International Uruguay reinforces social commitment through ‘Operation Hope’
An emblematic programme fostering inclusion, education and tourism experiences for rural schoolchildren.
Aligned with Skål International’s core values of solidarity and corporate social responsibility, Skål International Uruguay continues to successfully implement ‘Operation Hope’, an initiative that has been creating educational and cultural opportunities for rural schoolchildren since 1990.
Originally launched by the Board of Directors and coordinated by Skålega Fernando Medina —currently Honorary President of Skål International Uruguay—, this programme has grown into an annual tradition involving the clubs of Montevideo, Colonia and Punta del Este. Over more than three decades, it has benefited hundreds of children and teachers, offering them the chance to discover their country through a tourism and cultural lens.
Each edition welcomes around 40 students and their teachers, who enjoy a day designed to promote learning, integration and appreciation of national heritage. Activities include visits to iconic sites such as the International Airport, Montevideo Port, the Legislative Palace, the Centenario Stadium —the only World Football Heritage Monument—, as well as a scenic tour along the Rambla and attendance at a theatre performance.

For many of these children, it is their first experience in a city and in a tourism environment.
Beyond the experiential aspect, Skål International Uruguay strengthens its commitment by donating educational materials, books and essential resources to participating schools.
This is made possible thanks to the generosity of members, partner companies and public and private institutions that share the vision of building a more inclusive and sustainable future.
'Operation Hope' stands as a tangible example of how the tourism industry can generate positive social impact, contributing to the educational and cultural development of rural communities.
For Skål International Uruguay, this initiative is not only a source of pride but also a reaffirmation of its mission: to make tourism a force for good.
